Prepare for Your Mountain Expedition

A successful summit begins long before you hit the trail. Our comprehensive preparation guide will help you optimize your fitness, pack essential gear, and mentally prepare for the magic of Oregon's mountains. We're here to support you every step of the way.

For most moderate to strenuous hikes, we recommend starting a regular cardiovascular and strength training routine 8-12 weeks prior to your expedition. Focus on exercises like brisk walking, jogging, stair climbing, and squats. For more challenging peaks like South Sister, consider weighted pack carries and longer endurance activities. We offer personalized consultation to tailor a plan for you.

Recommended: 3-4 sessions per week, including one long walk/hike (2-4 hours) with elevation gain if possible.

Packing smart is crucial for comfort and safety. Key items include sturdy hiking boots (broken in!), layered moisture-wicking clothing, rain gear, a daypack, water bottles/hydration reservoir, snacks, sun protection (hat, sunglasses, sunscreen), and a headlamp. For multi-day trips, a comprehensive list will be provided. Specialty equipment like trekking poles, microspikes, or snowshoes are often available for rent, inquire upon booking.

Fuel your body with complex carbohydrates and healthy fats in the days leading up to your hike. On trial, bring easily digestible snacks and plan to drink plenty of water – more than you think you need! Mentally, embrace the challenge, focus on the journey, and trust your guide. Setting realistic expectations and practicing mindfulness can greatly enhance your experience.

We provide a pre-expedition briefing where we cover all these aspects in detail, ensuring you feel confident and prepared.
